Lots of major news making their way on the feeds this week, like Meta considering a project to join the fediverse. In the tech world, the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank was the major news. Personally I have found more coverage and comments on this event on my Mastodon feed than expected, indicating that the fediverse is rapidly getting better for following along with major news event. But everyone talking about the major news runs the risk of missing all the other relevant things that have happened. So here is this weeks roundup of all the other things that happened, starting with WordPress:
Mastodon and the fediverse keeping growing in mainstream acceptance. Major tech news outlets are seriously discussing and talking about it. In the Netherlands, a pilot has started that allows higher education students and researchers easy access to the fediverse. Growth of a network is hard, and growing pains are visible again this week.
Drama over the new Harry Potter game leads to the shutdown of the mastodon.lol server. The continued bot transition towards Mastodon. A public conversation on how to interpret Mastodon’s user numbers. Wildebeast, controversial new server software from Cloudflare is released.
The major theme of this week is news around technical infrastructure. Mastodon.social experiences a DDoS attack, Twitter shuts down free access to the API, Stanford is called on by the community to start their own Mastodon server, and new tools get released with some interesting implications on the capabilities of the fediverse.
